Philip Naviasky (1894-1983) - Artist and Teacher

Early Promise

Born in Leeds in 1894 to Polish-Jewish immigrants, Philip Naviasky's artistic talent blossomed early. At the exceptional age of 13, his skills were recognized with a scholarship to the Leeds School of Fine Arts. This marked the beginning of a remarkable artistic journey for the young Naviasky.

Royal Recognition and Artistic Development

Naviasky's dedication and talent continued to shine. In 1912, at the young age of 18, he achieved a remarkable feat - becoming the youngest student ever accepted into the prestigious Royal Academy Schools in London. This recognition was followed by a Royal Exhibition award, granting him three years of study at the Royal College of Art.

A Return to Leeds and Flourishing Career

Following his studies, Naviasky returned to his hometown of Leeds. He established himself as a respected artist and art teacher at the Leeds College of Art, inspiring future generations. While his teaching career nurtured others, Naviasky's own artistic voice flourished. He primarily focused on oil paintings, with a specialty in capturing the essence of his subjects through portraits, particularly those of women and children.

Beyond Portraits: Landscapes and Travel

Naviasky's artistic repertoire wasn't limited to portraits. He was also drawn to the beauty of landscapes. His paintings captured the atmospheric essence of Yorkshire, the place he called home. However, his artistic curiosity extended beyond his local surroundings. Naviasky travelled extensively throughout Europe and North Africa, finding inspiration in the diverse landscapes of Spain, France, Morocco, and other locations. These travels undoubtedly influenced his work, enriching his artistic perspective.

Exhibition Success and Legacy

Throughout his career, Naviasky exhibited his work widely. He participated in prestigious exhibitions at the Royal Academy, the Royal Scottish Academy, and other esteemed institutions. He also held a number of successful solo shows. Naviasky's artistic achievements were recognized not just through exhibitions, but also by prominent figures who commissioned portraits from him. These included Lord Nuffield, the industrialist, and politicians such as Ramsay MacDonald and Philip Snowden.

A Lasting Impact

Sadly, Naviasky's artistic journey was eventually cut short by failing eyesight in the late 1960s. Despite this setback, his artistic legacy continues to inspire. His paintings are still admired today and can be found in public collections across the UK, including galleries in Leeds, Bradford, Newcastle, and other cities.

Public galleries holding his work include the Ben Uri, Leeds City Art Gallery, Laing Art Gallery, Leeds University Collection, Harris Museum and Art Gallery, Preston, Stoke-on-Trent Art Gallery and Whitby Art Gallery hold his work. A retrospective exhibition of his portraits was held in Leeds at the Rug Collection Gallery in 2002.
