The Staithes Group of Artists, a collective of painters active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, holds a special place in British art history. Based in the picturesque fishing village of Staithes, North Yorkshire, this group of artists, including prominent figures like Fred Mayor and his wife, played a pivotal role in capturing the essence of coastal life in their evocative works of the time.

Fred Mayor (1866 – 1916) and his wife Hannah Hoyland (1871 – 1947) were central figures within the Staithes Group, being founding members in 1901. Known for their masterful portrayal of everyday scenes and landscapes, their paintings are infused with a sense of intimacy and authenticity, reflected the rustic charm and rugged beauty of Staithes, resonating deeply with audiences.

Together with fellow artists such as Laura Knight, Harold Knight, and Ernest Dade, the Staithes Group created a body of work that celebrated the simple joys and struggles of coastal existence, offering a glimpse into a bygone era of maritime heritage and community spirit.

The Staithes Group of Artists, though relatively short-lived, left an indelible mark on the art world, influencing subsequent generations of artists and drawing attention to the unique character of coastal communities. Today, still with a strong collector base, their works are celebrated in galleries and private collections worldwide, ensuring that the legacy of the Staithes Group endures as a testament to their artistic skills and visions.
