A lovely, signed Fred Yates Oil on Board in a good frame. This painting looks like an early 1980’s Yates work to us. From personal knowledge I can tell you that Fred painted this old railway bridge (The Wireworks Bridge 1874) from the far end of the Rose & Crown carpark, under the conker tree, next to the big stone. For artistic licence he has removed a tree next to the slipway to show the river in full view. On the left of the painting under the first arch of the bridge is a lovely streak of blue oil paint that represents the mud, this was from a period when the cows were allowed to walk under the bridge arch, churning the mud from the fields on the left going to Abbey Passage Farm on the right. This piece of water on the River Wye in Tintern is known as Ashweir, hence the tall Ash Tree and the white turbulent water where the weir rapids are flowing. Fred has also painted in the gable end of the old Village Hall on the right. If you visit us, we have another painting of this bridge in our private collection for you to compare this Fred Yates oil painting.
