"The Barbican, Plymouth" by Fred Yates portrays an entertaining urban landscape. Vibrant colours and thick, textured brushstrokes are used in the painting to give the scene movement and energy. Several figures, both adults and children, appear scattered in the scene engaged in a variety of activities, such as walking, talking, and interacting. While the curved street and stone wall in the foreground add depth to the composition, the background illustrates a variety of architectural styles, including brick and stone buildings. The environment is dotted with pigeons, which enhance the depiction of Plymouth's daily life. What about this piece most appeals to you?

The Barbican, Plymouth's original harbour, is a historically significant area. With its cobblestone streets and old buildings, some of which date to the Elizabethan period, it still exudes a sense of mediaeval charm. Being the point of departure for the Pilgrim Fathers on board the Mayflower in 1620, the region was important to maritime history. In addition, the Plymouth Gin Distillery, which has been making gin since 1793, is located there, as was Plymouth's fish market for centuries. The Barbican offers an intriguing look into Plymouth's past because of its history and architecture.
