Clive Williams (1944-2015)

Cornish Painter and Engraver

Painter and engraver born in Plymouth who came from generations of Devon farming stock and the inspiration for his work was always closely connected with the land. Clive Williams began his training at Plymouth School of Art, 1960-1964 where his tutors included Alexander MacKenzie.

The following two years were spent in London gaining a teaching diploma after which a full-time teaching career then followed until he retired in 1996. He then relocated to Cornwall to devote his time to freelance tuition and full-time painting.

He became involved in a number of art societies including the Penzance Arts Club, the Penzance Society of Artists, where he rose to Chairman, the Plymouth Society of Artists, later becoming a member of the St. Ives Society of Artists.

His work is held in the collections of Falmouth Art Gallery, Plymouth City Art Gallery, Penlee House Museum as well as numerous private collections throughout the UK, France, Germany, Holland, Spain and the USA.

In 2014 a monograph entitled ‘Some Paintings and Sketches’ was published with an appreciation by Lar Cann and, after a long and distinguished teaching and exhibiting career, Clive Williams passed away in 2015 following a long illness.
