Edward Piper (1938 - 1990)

A Modern British Painter and Printmaker

Edward Piper was the eldest son of the famous British artist John Egerton Christmas Piper (1903-1992) and his wife Myfanwy (1911–1997). After studying Art at the Bath Academy of Art in Corsham, Wiltshire, under Howard Hodgkin (1932-2017) Edward moved to Slade School of Art in London.

He was proficient in many artistic areas including photography, design & painting, and produced photographs for the Shell County Guides. He is perhaps best known for his figurative art and painting the female form, often nude.

The Tate hold approx. 8 Edward Piper works from the 1960’s and 1970’s, again mainly nude female forms as lithographs or screenprints.

Some of his work can be similar in to his father’s, whilst some is very different and contrasting. In his later career Edward Piper painted landscapes in Corsica, Malta, Italy, Spain, and France where his father was also known to paint his iconic churches and cathedrals.
